The Purpose of Art
Art sees patterns in the forms we observe. These patterns derive from the Creator. Art shows in structure, geometry, and color; in highlights and shadows; from background to foreground. It exalts God’s glory and the power that sustains these patterns. All things have derived their form and meaning from Christ. He completes and harmonizes them according to God’s eternal purpose.
The Blessing of Beauty
Beauty is the fingerprint of our maker. Beautiful art evokes deep reaction in us--mental, emotional and spiritual--when we perceive these fingerprints. We “sense” the Creator and that sensation brings us an otherworldly joy. When we are so blessed, we then bless others. And this is the real test of beauty--the experience of good art provokes us to bless others. Goodness and mercy trail after good art, like rainbows follow a storm.
Jim has had peaks of success and valleys of trial, but he has always been sustained by his best friend, Jesus. He was drawing and sculpting before he could read. His mother made sure he (and his seven siblings) always had a ready supply of art materials, even if just pencil and paper. He grew up in Colorado under the shadow of the Rocky Mountains and attended colleges in Washington, Colorado, and Maryland. Nearly seven feet tall, he played in National Championships in basketball and softball. He loves fishing, rafting, and skiing, and now as a Californian, snorkeling, scuba diving, and sailing. His career ranged from science to education to business. Now, aside from art, he studies ancient languages and serves people as a patient advocate.
Jim has been married to his beautiful, smart and talented wife Nancy for over thirty-five years with children and grandchildren. Nancy is a gifted writer, publishes a weekly newsletter, and teaches Bible Study for women. Art is a passion for both of them.
Largely self-taught, Jim painted a little in the 1970’s, but a devastating house fire destroyed his muse. Fifty years later, through the encouragement of his wife and son, he returned to the easel. Highly influenced by Romanticism and Impressionism, he excels in seascapes, landscapes, and portraits with both classical and progressive treatments, always to the delight of the eye and the joy of the soul.
